Growth Through People 2019: Developing management skills

Sweco

This case study is part of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce ‘Growth through People’ campaign in 2019.

Joanna Mole is a member of the Chamber Council for the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and is the Director for Strategic Consulting at Sweco, Northern Europe’s leading engineering, environment and design consultancy.  Recognised in 2018 by the NCE as a top ten civil engineering firm, Sweco combines a multi-disciplinary approach with access to international expertise to deliver robust solutions. The results of our work are sustainable buildings, efficient infrastructure and access to clean water.

In 2011, Joanna qualified as a Transport Planning Professional (TPP).  To stay abreast of new developments and to refresh her knowledge and skills, she is regularly involved in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities and most recently was commended by the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation for her outstanding CPD record.  The examiners considered her record excellent in all categories for ‘Plan, Act, Record and Reflect’.

As we obtain our main qualifications early in our careers, it’s important that we don’t stand still, but proactively develop and broaden our skills. Such development is essential if you want to become professionally qualified as you must demonstrate that you have undertaken the required number of hours in the lead up to your professional submission and after obtaining the qualification. It's important that you record and reflect on your activities, to determine whether they satisfy your personal and business objectives and then work out the next steps.

For me, I have identified my ‘vision’ and goals and shaped my CPD to help achieve objectives on a short to medium and long-term basis.  As I work in a multi-disciplinary environment, my activities tend to be quite broad including technical sessions as well as those to further develop my project management and commercial skills.  This is where the Chamber of Commerce’s ‘Growth through People’ events are ideal.  A CPD programme can include leadership seminars, technical and project management training, as well as Chamber of Commerce events and STEM activities.

The Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce 2019 ‘Growth through People’ campaign is running throughout February and March 2019.  You can book events through the following link and record leadership seminars as part of Continuing Professional Development.
