Mazars
This blog is part of the Asian Business Chamber of Commerce’s (ABCC) Diversity in Leadership campaign.
The Diversity in Leadership campaign works with some of the regions’ biggest employers in order to boost the numbers of women and those from black and minority ethnic (BAME), lesbian gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and disability groups being represented on boards of directors and in leadership roles.

In this blog, Hemehra Sajid, a senior internal auditor based in Birmingham, at Mazars, shares what made her want to become an internal auditor, what has contributed most to her success and how she faces challenges when times get tough.
I am a senior internal auditor primarily within the Risk Assurance Services public sector, where we deal with social housing, education, and police. I wanted to pursue my career path to increase my confidence - I was a very shy, reserved and unconfident person. I recognised that I needed to come out of my comfort zone and interact more with people, although I am still an introvert.
My faith and patience have contributed to my success everyone has their time and I am a firm believer of this - things will happen at the best time for you. I have to thank my best friend Kieran for referring me to Mazars.
I owe much to my family and friends for their support and encouragement for me to chase my career goals.
One lesson I have learned about leadership is to only look down if you are helping someone up. I have a great management support network and I strive to be one of them, so that I can help to develop others too.
Every day I make a point of taking a minimum of 10 minutes to be silent, breathe and have gratitude. I pray daily, which helps me to remain calm and be strong.
My advice to the next generation of leaders would be listen to those around you and especially junior members of your team. Help to develop junior team members to help them play to their strengths. Essentially, you can bridge the gap between junior and senior staff.
