GTP20: The OTHER stuff

Inspired Partners

This blog post has been produced for the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce as part of the 2020 Growth Through People campaign.

Growth Through People is the Chamber’s annual campaign aiming to help local firms boost productivity and grow through improved leadership and people management skills. In 2020 this involves 8 free workshops taking place between 2nd March and 27th March, culminating in a full-day Growth Through People conference on 2nd April. In addition, throughout the campaign the Chambers will be publishing thought leadership podcasts, videos and blog content such as this.

Thanks to our Headline Sponsors – Prime Accountants Group, Aston University, Curium Solutions and CIPD - all workshops are free to attend. Interested readers can find out more and register to attend Growth Through People workshops here, and the Growth Through People conference here.

‘Change’ is all around us, whether that’s changes in technology, Brexit, #metoo or a new family member arriving. This fast-paced and changing world is also mirrored in most organisations, whether that’s changes in the marketplace, new management teams with different ideas, or updating processes and procedures.  And what is interesting is that ‘change management’ is not taught individuals are just expected to understand how to do it by osmosis, natural aptitude or luck!

There are three key elements that are critical to successful change.

  • Define ‘what’ the change is, or scoping the change, to ensure all aspects are taken into consideration, for example introducing new software is more than doing some training, migrating the data and hoping that everyone will start to use it.
  • Understand ‘how’ to implement the change to ensure that the desired outcomes are sustained over time and don’t wither away as soon as the next ‘bright and shiny’ thing comes along.
  • Consider ‘who’ the change is impacting and how best to engage with them when they are transitioning along their own personal change curve. Thinking about the ‘what’s in it for me’ is important for different individuals / groups.

The OTHER Stuff is a simple, diagnostic tool that explores those OTHER areas of change management that are often overlooked in achieving successful and sustainable change.  This builds on the three elements above and is based on practical experience and validated by academic research.  The five OTHER areas are:

  • Outcomes – Identifying the desired outcomes to better understand the change you need to make
  • Tenacity – Demonstrating an unwavering pursuit of the desired outcomes
  • Human – Showing compassion and empathy for individuals and their perspective in the wider context of the change
  • Engagement – Harnessing the emotional commitment from people to achieve the desired outcomes
  • Reinforcement – Supporting the desired behaviours and practices to sustain the change right from the start

The OTHER Stuff comprises of a set of cards which describe the key aspects of each area.  These are used in a workshop setting by individuals from within the business.  The cards are used to facilitate a discussion about what is in place and what still needs to be addressed.  The cards act as a training device as well as helping the group develop their onward plans.

The workshop provides an opportunity to pause, gauge views and diagnose areas to focus on.  Leaving the participants, and the business, with a clear way to move forward.

With change for many businesses now a constant, statistics still show that over 80% of change programmes fail to deliver the desired benefits.  The OTHER Stuff helps people to address what’s bothering their business.  It helps companies become more resilient by sharing with SME’s proven change practices that deliver tangible business benefits.

It had delivered a 100% success rate in helping address change challenges in business. Contact us and find out how it can help you.
