Henpicked - Menopause in the Workplace & BMR Health and Wellbeing

BMR Health and Wellbeing

BMR Health and Wellbeing announced a partnership with Henpicked – Menopause in the Workplace (MIW), an organisation that support businesses to implement education to support menopausal women and help leaders have great conversations.

So why do we need to know more about the menopause?

Well, it effects 50 per cent of the population. Each woman will have a unique experience that will last for a different amount of time. It can start as early as twenty and the symptoms can vary. One in four women consider leaving work due to the menopause. Hence, education is key for both the employee and the employer.

First let us clarify the stages of menopause;

  • Perimenopause – This is the stage leading up menopause and can last for 4-8 years.
  • Menopause - this means the natural cessation of periods, often known as ‘the change.’ A woman achieves menopause when she has not had periods for twelve consecutive months. The following day is classed as the menopause.
  • Post menopause – this is the time after the menopause which lasts for the rest of your life.

Symptoms during perimenopause

Now this is the important bit as there are loads of myths, and many women go undiagnosed or diagnosed with depression.

Physical symptoms

  • Hot flushes experienced during the day or night (night sweats)
  • Changes to periods, increased or decreased flow, increase or decrease in frequency
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Aching joints
  • Itching
  • Changes to skin
  • Hair thinning

Psychological symptoms

  • Increased anxiety or worry
  • Lack of confidence and self esteem
  • Low or changing moods
  • Problems with memory recall
  • Brain fog
  • Heightened emotions
  • Decreased sex drive

There are many more symptoms that women can experience and the most important thing is to seek advice from your GP if you are struggling.

This blog is just a taster of the training and education BMR that are available, which will add more to your organisation’s wellbeing strategy to help all employees feel supported at all their life stages.
