Charlie Fogarty MBE: Overcoming adversity
Charlie Fogarty MBE, suffered a severe brain injury after being hit by an overtaking car whilst crossing the road. Following the accident Charlie was rushed to Birmingham Children’s hospital, placed in an induced coma and spent 11 uncertain days in intensive care. He then was transferred on to a Neuro ward where he spent the next four months in the early stages of recovery. Charlie completed a six-month rehabilitation programme in Surrey Children’s trust where he learned to eat, walk and talk. He finally returned home in February 2013.
Shortly before the accident Charlie had finished a four-year contract at Birmingham City FC’s Academy and was trialling for Milton Keynes Dons. Previously a bright boy at school, tests taken after the accident at the rehabilitation centre showed that Charlie’s educational memory in Maths and English were between level one and two, Charlie went back to his previous school in Solihull with one-to-one support and has now completed a degree in Sports Science.
Charlie started playing football for the West Midlands Centre of Excellence Cerebral Palsy team in July 2013 and was selected for the Northern Ireland CP team in January 2015. Charlie has since travelled to Denmark to play in the Intercontinental CP Championships and has also played in two CP World Cups, in England and Argentina.
Charlie’s determination in his battle back to fitness and to inspire others earned him an MBE in the recent Honours List.

Claiming your R&D tax credits with GovGrant
Today, most businesses are aware of Research and Development tax credits and claiming back the benefits from HMRC, but are you receiving the maximum amount you can get and more importantly have you understood that many of the projects you are claiming for have the potential for a patent application, which can be at a very reasonable cost. This patent opportunity will have three significant benefits for the business: Competitive protection for the business as it grows, a real increase in the value of the company when seeking growth finance, and an opportunity to cut corporation tax to 10%. Why not come along and find out how your business could benefit?
GovGrant was the first independent specialist adviser on Research and Development and remains a leading expert in this area. They have uniquely broadened their expertise into intellectual property management advice and now offer a comprehensive service to their clients. Having completed a successful claim for the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, we have invited one of their founders to come along and talk about the scheme, demonstrate real examples that show the breadth of the scheme and the benefits of understanding all that can be claimed. More importantly to talk about the hidden value inside most of the claiming businesses, both for business growth and valuation but also for tax reduction.
