Profit with purpose, Environmental & Social Governance (ESG), Social Value, CSR. From climate change to attracting and retaining a new more socially minded generation of employees - recent events have brought exploring and articulating businesses’ wider role in society up many board and exec agendas.  

This quarterly forum for GBCC members explores how businesses are tackling this subject and why: the tangible business benefits to doing so. Each event sees a panel of; a business case study, a professional advisor and a representative from the public or third sector sharing their insights and perspectives before a series of roundtable discussions.

Chair: Henrietta Brealey

Henrietta is CEO of the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, she was appointed to the role in April 2021 after 5 years as the GBCC’s Director of Policy & Strategic Relationships. In 2019 she was named as one of Birmingham Live’s Brum 30 Under 30. In 2021 she was awarded an honorary fellowship by University College Birmingham for services to Birmingham.

Jessica Wilkes-Ball, Sustainability Manager, Mills & Reeve LLP

Jessica joined the ESG leadership team at Mills & Reeve in 2022 as the firms first ever sustainability manager. Jessica’s responsibilities include the development and delivery of a firm-wide sustainability strategy for Mills & Reeve.

Since starting in role she has delivered a number of initiatives including creating the firms first ever Carbon Reduction Plan as well as setting their Net Zero target.

Jessica has recently joined the West Midlands Board Member for Business in the Community and is honoured to represent Mills & Reeve in the region and looks forward to connecting the firm with other likeminded individuals.

Jessica is also an active member of the Legal Sustainability Alliance and recently joined the Net Zero Protocol working group with The Law Society. Outside of work she is a proud trustee for Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer. Jessica lives in Shropshire with her husband son and stepson and is inspired through her work to build a better world for everyone to enjoy.

Tom Proverbs-Garbett, FCG, Associate Director, RSM

Tom is a fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute (formerly ICSA), whose consultancy practice focusses on corporate governance matters and issues surrounding directors' duties.

Previously a corporate lawyer at a top-20 law firm, Tom led its UK governance and company secretarial function. He works closely with clients on their governance needs, including in the context of wider ESG matters.  He provides training for boards and individual directors and their executive reports.  

Tom speaks and publishes regularly on all aspects of governance. He is also a chartered manager and holds an MBA.

Janet Douglas, Founder/CEO, Feed My Creative

Janet Douglas the founder and CEO of Feed My Creative CIC, a multi award winning social enterprise who works with young people and adults demonstrating ways to be more sustainable with fabrics with a community focus. Her aims are to reduce waste, create more sustainable communities, inspire creativity through craft workshops focused on using recycled fabric and materials and having the opportunity to talk about common issues and/or experiences, bereavement etc. whilst being creative.

Janet has over 30yrs of design and creating experience and 11 years of qualified teaching experience within secondary schools and alternative provisions.

*Guest speakers will rotate between roundtable based discussions every 15 minutes.

We are intending to hold this event in person, however should COVID-19 guidelines change we would adapt this to an online event.
