How completing a physical challenge can help you run a small business

Recently taking part in a charity challenge of walking 24 peaks, in the Lake District, in 24 hours. (#24in24) really got me thinking…

It was brutal at times and highly rewarding and gloriously peaceful at others.

It took an enormous amount of physical, as well as emotional and mental strength. All of which I love to challenge myself on. Having being in business for 15 years self-belief and confidence is a huge part of day-to-day life.

The ‘walk' got me thinking that the energy it takes to be successful on an intense physical challenge is so much alike the energy needed to have longevity and success in business.

I wonder if you agree?

For both to culminate in success you need to take one step at a time. Have your end goal in mind but take it one step at a time. Mountain by mountain. Literally.

MLK said it best:

“You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”? Martin Luther King Jr.

Have a clear ‘why'. Without it your motivation will (most certainly) wane. Keep that ‘why' close to you - in a visual way is best. I had a picture of my father-in-law, Kevin (who we were raising money for) on my vest. This had the added bonus of receiving lots of encouragement and ‘you-can-do-this' along the way. This meant more than I can have ever planned for.

Remember those who have been there, done it, before you. I kept thinking about David Walliams, Davina McCall, Eddie Izzard - those who embarked on massive physical and mental challenges and achieved them despite injuries, huge mindset challenges and setbacks. So, when my toes started to really become incredibly painful and throb Shackleton came to mind.

Have some skin in the game. In business this comes in the form of investing in a course or a coach. For a challenge it's most likely sponsorship and the charity you're raising funds for. After day one, my mindset was starting to doubt my physical ability to achieve. Then we received a very generous donation from a client and a lovely WhatsApp message of encouragement. This came at just the right time! (Thanks to all those who sponsored!)

So, after 22 hrs & 40 mins, 37 miles, 13,000ft of ascent, bruised toes, and battered feet #24in24 was smashed!

Running a small business and handling all the ups and downs requires mental strength more than any other skill. The good news is self-belief and confidence are learned skills.
