Businesses that have been adversely impacted by the pandemic but are ineligible for existing support linked to business rates can now apply for the Covid-19 Additional Relief Fund (CARF).

CARF, originally announced in March 2021, is available to reduce eligible business rates liability for 2021/22.

To qualify, businesses must:

  • have been trading from 1 April 2021
  • not be entitled to or have already received a reduction against the business rates liability for the 2021/22 billing year
  • have been adversely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic during 2021/22
  • be solvent
  • have been occupied and trading for the period.

Businesses closed temporarily due to government instructions on Covid-19 will be treated as occupied for this relief.

Erin Henwood, policy advisor at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “With many firms voicing concerns about the rapidly rising cost of doing business, it is important that all eligible businesses apply for CARF as soon as possible for much-needed financial support.

“The Chamber is continuing to work with members, partners and stakeholders to raise awareness of business conditions on the ground and the relevant support mechanisms still available to keep business moving through both the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis. ”
