Chamber launches new training course to ease upcoming transition of Customs platform
Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce’s (GBCC) training team has launched a new course on the ‘Introduction to Customs declarations in CDS’.
The training comes at a time where the previous CHIEF platform, the mainframe computer database where import and export entries have been lodged for many years will cease to exist from March 2024.
It will be replaced by a new CDS platform where declarations will need to be produced.
The training course is happening online on Wednesday 17 January from 9.30 am to 3.30pm.
The course will be packed with guidance for those who are currently completing import or export Customs declarations, or for those new to the process and looking to learn about the CDS platform.
As CHIEF will cease to exist at the end of March 2024 for export declarations, this course will provide a detailed overview of the platform CDS where the declarations will need to be produced.
Anyone who completes the paperwork needed when shipping must be aware of the process, the new CDS system and the procedure to avoid hurdles when trading. Inputting the incorrect information to your declarations could cause many issues, delays, and possible fines.
In learning how to complete declarations on the platform correctly, participants will save vital time and eliminate possible errors.
Expert trainer Malin Geanovu has provided three key areas he will be covering to help ease the process:
- The day will cover the variances between CHIEF and CDS, including what you need to do differently
- Data elements to be used in the completion of a CDS declaration for both Import & Export entries.
- The full export and import processes around classification, origin and import taxes will also be explained.
Training manager Leah Quarmby (pictured) said: “When previously speaking with customers who complete declarations frequently, many thought the process of moving from one system to another wouldn’t be very different.
“Upon making the switch, many have confirmed discovering differences and have faced problems they haven’t known how to fix.
“The content of the training has helped to highlight key changes and provided guidance customers wouldn’t have thought about.
“The course is designed to indicate any points which could cause issues when doing declarations. If an importer or exporter is aware of any potential issue and knows how to fix it, the course has been worthwhile”
