Two students joined Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) as a part of their work experience programme.

The two students, Tania and Blnd study at King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy, who are also patrons of the Chamber.

They worked with various Chamber departments, attended events and learned about how GBCC supports members and the wider business community.

Speaking about the experience, Blnd said: “My time spent at GBCC has been a great insight into the world of work.

“If I had to highlight one significant feature of my time here which puts this workplace in favour is its easy flowing, serene environment with lively people which elevate the mood. I am treated as though I were a serious worker which elucidates this workplace and forms a greater third-person perspective.”

Tania said: “Work experience at GBCC has helped me explore the wide, diverse range of opportunities you can have within a workplace.

“I’ve listened to experts in each sector, which has helped me explore my own personal interests in a potential business career and this experience is something I would really recommend to everyone as it is a great opportunity.”

Policy and projects assistant, Francesca Thomas, who leads the GBCC work experience programme said: “This is our third year offering two students from King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy work experience at the Chamber as part of our relationship with Chamber Patron King Edward VI.

“It’s always great to work with pupils from Academy, the students are ambitious and keen to learn.

“We’re proud to give young people the opportunity to experience the real world of work and have found our connection with Balaam Wood to be particularly fulfilling for all involved.

“Blnd and Tania have been brilliant additions to Team Chamber, and it has been a pleasure collaborating with Balaam Wood’s Careers Leader and Head of Year 11, Yolanda Duckworth, to develop this programme from year to year.”

Meanwhile, King Edward VI Northfield School for Girls has arranged a careers fair which is being held on Tuesday, 15 October from 9.15am - 12.40pm

They are keen to hear from local employers who would be interested in speaking with students about apprenticeship and career pathways, post school pathways after GCSE options and to support students in finding out what skills, qualifications, and attributes employers are looking for.

Students will be learning about apprenticeships, post school options and skills and qualifications as part of their PSHE curriculum and the careers fair will form part of this learning.

Students will also have a list of questions prepared to speak to employers, colleges and universities.

If you know of any local businesses and/or employers who would like the opportunity to talk about their apprenticeships and job vacancies, please email Sarah Miles s.miles@nsg.kevibham.org.
