College stepping up in science
South and City College are working hard to offer valuable experience to students studying their new Science T-Level.
Following feedback from employers that jobs are hard to fill with suitably experienced and qualified candidates, the team at South and City College have taken on the challenge of providing the industry with these highly valued skills through the provision of T-Levels.
T-Levels are new qualifications which will be similar to BTEC learning with one key difference - a significant amount of work experience will be included to fully equip students with the skills they need to gain a successful career in their chosen profession. Students studying T-Levels will need to complete a minimum of 45 days ' work experience to be able to pass their course.
The Work Placement Team at South and City College are also preparing students for working life with a comprehensive employability programme running alongside the initial 3 months of their course.
Rebecca Waterfield, deputy director for employer engagement, said: “With the current skills shortage in the Science sector, timing couldn 't have been better for us to start offering T-Levels to meet the needs of local employers. Our courses are fully employer lead and we 're working with local businesses to make sure we 're preparing our students with up to the minute information about current trends and regulations ”.
“Our students are more committed than ever to making successful careers with local businesses. By starting a T-Level programme, students know that they will be receiving high quality work placement experience and have the opportunity to get their foot in the door with their chosen career. With progression routes available to Degree level and beyond, the T-Level offers sustainable recruitment and succession planning opportunities for employers too! ”
South and City College Birmingham will be hosting a webinar for employers interested in supporting T-Level students with Science related opportunities on Monday 4 July 2020 from 15.30-17.30 (initial presentation 15.30-16.00 with drop in Q&A session available until 17.30).
