Adults interested in studying STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) are being reminded about new courses starting this September term.

Staffordshire County Council’s Community Learning Service courses are designed to build practical skills and prepare learners for exciting opportunities in today’s evolving job market.

With most courses fully funded and free, they offer adults aged 19-plus in Staffordshire an opportunity to take the next step in their learning journeys.

Courses starting this month include:

  • Wonderful woodwork and tree science: Learn woodworking techniques, tree science, measurement, material properties and sustainable design, all through project-based learning and a field study visit.
  • Getting work ready: Boost your IT confidence and workplace skills with sessions in document creation, collaborative tools, spreadsheets and digital accuracy checks.
  • Branch into nature: A taster-level introduction to environmental careers, covering conservation, ecology, nature-based wellbeing, regeneration and sustainability.

Martin Murray, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills at Staffordshire County Council, said: “STEM skills are increasingly vital in today’s world, whether in engineering, construction or digital industries.

“These new courses are about giving Staffordshire residents the chance to explore practical learning that can open doors to future careers, support local businesses and boost confidence. By making them free and widely accessible, we’re making sure that everyone has the chance to thrive.”

In addition to STEM and vocational subjects, the service offers free courses in other areas including:

  • Family learning: Courses for parents and carers such as Baby Loves Nature in the Autumn (online sensory learning for babies and toddlers) and family cookery and budgeting.
  • Health and wellbeing: Programmes that build confidence, independence and community connections - ranging from DIY and crafting skills to nature-based wellbeing courses.
  • English, maths and digital skills: Functional skills and everyday essentials, including beginner courses in using digital devices, staying safe online and improving reading, writing and numeracy.
  • ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages): Supporting residents who want to improve their English for work, study and everyday life in the UK.

People can explore the full course directory and enrol today on the Community Learning webpage or email [email protected] for guidance.
