The next phase of construction is underway at the Kids’ Village site in Staffordshire, marking a major step forward in the creation of the UK’s first holiday village exclusively for children with critical illnesses and their families.

Work has begun on a 573-metre internal road through the Kids’ Village site.

This road will lead to the ten lodge plots and once built, will enable families to drive directly to their individual four-bedroom lodges for a free of charge, week-long holiday.

Crown Highways, based in Burntwood, Staffordshire, has been appointed to deliver these works.

With over 25 years of experience, Crown Highways is a national leader in highways infrastructure, known for its expertise in civil engineering, lighting and technology installation, and maintenance.

The company is recognised for delivering high quality, collaborative solutions across the UK.

Mike Dale, managing director of Crown Highways, said: “We are incredibly proud to be part of such a meaningful project. Kids’ Village is more than just a construction site, it’s a place that will bring joy, comfort, and lasting memories to families who need it most.

“As a local business, it’s an honour to contribute our expertise to something that will have such a profound and positive impact on the lives of children and their loved ones.”

Doug Wright MBE, chairman of Kids’ Village, added: “We’re building something the UK has never seen before, a place where critically ill children and their families can enjoy a magical break together, free of charge in the beautiful countryside just a few miles outside of Lichfield.

“The internal road build is a significant milestone and we’re so grateful to Crown Highways for their contribution to the project, and also to everyone who has contributed to our capital appeal to date. Together you have enabled us to start this phase of construction.”

Targeting a 2027 opening, Kids’ Village will open in phases, enabling the charity to begin welcoming families while continuing to grow and develop the wider site.

To complete this first phase and open to families, Kids’ Village needs to raise £3.3 million.

With £2 million already secured through community fundraising, corporate support, and major gifts, just over £1 million remains to reach the target and begin supporting families.

In addition to donations, Kids’ Village is calling on contractors and suppliers to consider in-kind support, particularly for groundworks and site infrastructure.
