Council to introduce weekly food waste collection service
The East Staffordshire Borough Council will soon be introducing a weekly food waste collection service to all residents.
The initiative comes in accordance with the Environment Act 2021, where the Government has introduced ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation across England to help make recycling easier for households.
As part of this legislation, the Council is legally required to introduce a separate weekly food waste collection service to all residents.
To support this, new containers will be delivered to every household throughout January. Each household will receive the following:
- A 7-litre silver/grey indoor kitchen caddy
- A larger 23-litre green external caddy with a lockable lid
- A roll of liners to use in the 7-litre caddy which, when full, should be tied and transferred to the green caddy
- An information leaflet explaining how the new service will work
The collection crews will empty the green caddy each week on a household’s usual scheduled collection day.
The new service will commence on 30 March 2026. Households should not use their caddies prior to this date as the food waste will not be collected.
Residents who live in flats and apartments and use communal bins will have their caddies delivered nearer to the proposed start date.
Councillor Dennis Fletcher, cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “The introduction of this new service will ensure the Council complies with the legislation introduced by the Government.
“Analysis of the grey wheelie bins in East Staffordshire has highlighted some can contain up to 43 per cent of food waste.
“Collecting it separately reduces disposal costs and the subsequent treatment process creates green energy and a fertilizer, thus benefiting the environment”.
