Creative nursery children inspired on World Book Day

Children from Highfield Day Nursery in Edgbaston have been inspired to write their very own book.

Ahead of World Book Day today, the talented children have showcased the project, detailing their individual experiences of the pandemic through a range of personal accounts and drawings.

The book, which is titled 'Our World ' and has been written and illustrated by six pre-schoolers from the Ofsted-rated 'Outstanding ' Day Nursery on Highfield Road, was inspired by a circle time session where the children 's ideas and feelings were discussed, before being complied into a book to capture the extraordinary time.

From forming protective bubble groups in nursery and having temperature checks to visiting grandparents from the doorstep, children explained the changes they have faced and how it made them feel, as well as stating what they are looking forward to in the near future, such as visiting restaurants and going on holiday with family.

Iris, Aylin, Karishma, Agatha, Maisie and Parie, who are all aged between three and four and have co-authored the book together, have not only sent their publication to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, but are now also selling copies to proud parents at the nursery, in exchange for a small donation to chosen charity, Cancer Research UK.

Highfield Day Nursery deputy manager, Laura Phipps, said: “We are incredibly proud of the children, not only for the way they have navigated the pandemic as a whole, but for being able to articulate their feelings in such a way and create something beautiful as a result.

“The project has been entirely child-led with no influence from practitioners and we are so impressed with the book, as are our nursery families who have purchased their own copies for such a worthy cause. ”
