The Government has outlined its approach to protecting and promoting the UK 's interests in cyberspace in its National Cyber Strategy 2022.

The 2022 Strategy envisages that the UK in 2030 will continue to be a leading responsible and democratic cyber power, and will protect and promote interests in and through cyberspace in support of national goals.

The Integrated Review outlined five 'priority actions ' for the 2022 strategy, which the Government intends to use as pillars of the strategic framework.

These pillars include:

  1. Strengthening the UK cyber ecosystem by investing in people and skills
  2. Building a resilient and prosperous digital UK, reducing cyber risks so businesses can maximise the benefits of digital technology and citizens are more secure online
  3. Taking the lead in the technologies vital to cyber power, building our industrial capability and developing frameworks to secure future technologies
  4. Advancing UK global leadership and influence for a more secure, prosperous and open international order
  5. Detecting, disrupting and deterring the UK 's adversaries to enhance UK security in and through cyberspace

In October 's Comprehensive Spending Review, the Government announced £2.6 billion worth of investment in cyber.

Erin Henwood (pictured), policy advisor at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “The Government 's National Cyber Strategy is good news for businesses across the country who are having to adapt to a new way of working as a result of the pandemic.

“According to the British Chambers of Commerce 's International Trade Survey, 14 per cent of businesses reported that they had been victims of a cyberattack in the last 12 months.

“As such, increasing investment in the cyber sector will help to protect both businesses and citizens against cyber risks, whilst helping them to level up in an increasingly digitalised world.

“A key element of the Government 's plan is its focus on cyber resilience, which will enable businesses to capitalise upon the benefits of digital technology and ensure that both businesses and citizens are better protected online.

“It is encouraging to see the Government commit to ensuring cyber sector growth across all areas of the UK and, from a regional perspective, we will be keenly awaiting the finer details of how the West Midlands stands to benefit from this Strategy. ”

Andrew Penlington, regional director at Air IT, said: “We 've seen first-hand the hurdles that businesses in the Greater Birmingham area have had to overcome during the past couple of years, supporting them through the additional security challenges that come with switching to a remote or hybrid working model.

“Whilst businesses become increasingly vigilant and aware of the cyber risks they are faced with, this should be a top priority so we welcome the Government 's new strategy and its commitment to innovation and resilience.

“We look forward to seeing the benefits of increased investment in the sector, for both local businesses and the next generation of cyber security talent in the region. ”
