Engineering academy celebrates another year of student success
WMG Academy Solihull have announced they are celebrating another year of outstanding destinations for all students in Year 13.
WMG Academy chief executive, Stewart Tait, commented: “I am delighted that students at the WMG Academies have had their commitment and endeavours rewarded with impressive examination results that will allow them to progress to the next stage of their journey, be that University, Apprenticeships or direct employment.
“Whilst it is always pleasing to report year on year improvements in results, this year has seen a significant increase in the highest grades gained in Technical Qualifications at Distinction * and Distinction. In our areas of specialism, the average student grade was a Distinction-.
“Once again, there is a very impressive range of destinations that have been secured by Year 13 students that they and their teachers and parents should be rightly proud of.”
Further highlights of this year’s student results and destinations include:
- 87 per cent of the whole cohort achieved grades between A* to C and / or Distinction* to Merit
- The Academy’s engineering specialist subjects have secured outstanding results in all Level 3 qualifications; these include: - 100 per cent Distinction* to Merit in BTEC Engineering Extended Diploma (Triple)
- 100 per cent Distinction* to Merit in BTEC in Engineering Extended Certificate (Single)
- 100 per cent Distinction* to Merit in BTEC in Art Extended Certificate (Single)
- 96 per cent Distinction* to Merit in BTEC in Engineering Diploma (Double)
- 100 per cent A* to C in A Level English
- 100 per cent of BTEC Business students achieved Distinctions
Over half of the Academy’s Year 13 students applied for and subsequently secured places at University. Examples this year, include: University of Birmingham, University of Bath, Keele University and Coventry University with the remaining students securing apprenticeships with employers including; Amazon, Sertec and Babcock or direct employment with employers including EBM

Student Princess was equally high performing achieving a Distinction Grade in BTEC Business studies, a Grade A in A level computer Science, Grade B in A level maths and a Grade B in Extended Professional Qualification (EPQ).
Another student, Caira, achieved a A* Grade in A level Product Design, Grade B in A level Maths and Grade B in A level Physics. She said: “Being at WMG Academy Solihull meant that I could engage with big companies like Birmingham Airport. This allowed me to produce a fantastic portfolio to get accepted into the University of Bath to study Architecture.”
NB: D and D* grades refer to Distinction and Distinction* grades available on Engineering and Science BTEC qualifications. D* is equivalent to A* and D is equivalent to A.
