From undervalued to unstoppable: Kiran Green’s journey to Refined Glow Aesthetics
Written by Becky Benbow from A Burden Shared Limited
In an industry where trends can sometimes speak louder than substance, it’s refreshing to meet someone who stays true to their values and that’s exactly what Kiran Green does.
As the founder of Refined Glow Aesthetics in Birmingham, Kiran has spent over two decades honing her craft, always putting quality, integrity, and her clients’ wellbeing first.
I’ve known Kiran for a while now, supporting her business, and recently had the pleasure of sitting down with her to chat about her journey – the highs, the challenges, and everything in between.
What unfolded was an inspiring conversation about building a business with heart, staying grounded in a fast-paced industry, and the importance of owning your story.
"Starting my own business wasn't just a career move; it was about reclaiming my power, my voice, and my future." - Kiran Green
Take me back to the moment you decided to start your own business. What was happening in your life, and what pushed you over the edge from thinking about it to actually doing it?
Starting my own business was something I had thought about for years, but self-doubt always held me back. I stayed in the industry, working hard, building experience, and constantly proving myself yet I was never truly valued or fairly compensated.
Despite having the skills and the drive, I was often overlooked. I believe my warm, bubbly personality something that brings light and positivity to any workplace was misjudged.
Instead of being seen as a strength, it was treated like a weakness.
Over time, I realised I was stuck in toxic environments where my contributions were undervalued and my enthusiasm wasn’t welcome.
In the end, I wasn’t even paid for my work. I could have taken legal action, but the cost, stress, and disappointment just weren’t worth it.
That was the breaking point. I thought to myself: I’m nearly 42 what am I waiting for? I needed a new challenge, one that I could own.
It was clear no one else was going to hand me the opportunity I deserved, so I created it for myself.
How has your business changed from what you originally envisioned? What forced you to pivot or adapt?
When I started this journey, I had high hopes. I truly believed that my skills, qualifications, and passion would speak for themselves.
What I didn’t realise is just how hard and slow the growth would be especially in an industry where not everyone values quality the same way.
One of the biggest surprises has been how many people still look for the cheapest option turning to therapists who aren’t fully qualified, using low-quality equipment, or operating with only CPD certifications.
CPD training isn’t a qualification it’s a certificate, and it doesn’t guarantee the essential skills, safety standards, or customer care that clients deserve.
Through this work, I’ve been forced to do more research, observe the market, and adjust my approach.
But one thing I’ve never compromised on is quality. I trained properly. I worked my way through college, through high-end salons and clinics, learning not just the technical side of beauty and wellness but the importance of professionalism, hygiene, safety, and delivering true results.
What’s disheartening is that not everyone values those things but that hasn’t shaken my standards.
In fact, it’s strengthened my mission: to offer high-end treatments, expert care, and real results to people who want more than a quick fix or a cheap appointment.
While I haven’t changed my vision, I’ve definitely had to adapt.
I’ve tried everything from networking events and Google ads to social media marketing and directories just to get my name out there. Because I know once people experience my services, they come back. They see the difference.
Walk me through your first major professional breakthrough. What happened, and how did it feel to realise you might actually make this work?
My breakthrough wasn’t one big dramatic moment, it was a series of small, powerful realisations. Every time a client returned, referred a friend, or gave heartfelt feedback, it reminded me: This is going to work.
People do notice the difference. They feel the care, the expertise, and the results and they appreciate it. That’s why I keep going, even on the hard days when doubt creeps in. Self-belief is key.
This business might be a slow burner, but it’s building on strong, solid foundations.
This journey has taught me that success won’t come overnight. But it will come because I’m delivering something real, something premium, and something people genuinely value once they find it.
What's the hardest lesson you've learned about running a business that no one warned you about beforehand?
One of the biggest surprises I faced when I became a business director was how quickly people assumed I had money to spend.
Suddenly, I became a target for constant sales pitches people promising the world and delivering very little. It was overwhelming at first, and I learned the hard way that not everyone has your best interests at heart.
Business is full of trial and error, and the journey is rarely smooth.
Looking back, I wish I had known how important it is to have a solid financial cushion especially for marketing. Ideally, I would have set aside 1 to 2 months’ worth of marketing budget before launching.
At the time, I didn’t know that, and I didn’t really have anyone to guide me.
Now, I’m incredibly grateful to have a mentor - someone I can turn to for advice, guidance, and clarity.
She’s been a game-changer for me, helping me navigate the business world with more confidence and less guesswork. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that having the right support is absolutely vital.
What have been your greatest lessons so far in setting up in business as a solopreneur?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is how much I treasure the freedom that comes with running my own business. Having a space that feels like mine calm, welcoming, and true to who I am has been a dream.
I love being able to shape my treatments exactly how I would want to experience them as a client. That personal touch and attention to detail are what set my services apart, and it’s where I find the most joy in what I do.
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. I’ve also learned that being a solopreneur doesn’t mean doing everything alone.
In the beginning, I thought I had to know it all and be everything at once.
But over time, I’ve realised that seeking support whether through mentorship, community, or simply asking questions is essential. You don’t have to carry the entire weight of your business on your own shoulders. Asking for help is not a weakness; it’s a smart and powerful move.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice on day one, what would it be?
I wish I’d started earlier, instead of waiting for a breaking point to push me into action.
But at the same time, I now understand that those hard experiences gave me the strength and clarity I needed to move forward with confidence. Sometimes it takes hitting a low point to realise what you’re truly capable of.
Take the risk sooner. Don't wait for a situation to become unbearable before you bet on yourself.
I’d also remind myself to be kind to myself & look after my wellbeing as much as my business.
Burnout doesn’t build success; balance does. Rest, recharge, and lean on those who are there to support you. You don’t have to prove your worth through struggle.
Give me a behind-the-scenes fact that would surprise people
One thing most people don’t know? I’ve met some truly amazing people through this journey, collaborators and kindred spirits who really see me for who I am.
While I can’t spill all the details just yet, these connections have been an incredible privilege and a huge confidence boost. It’s such a joy to be valued and recognised in ways I never expected!
Finally, when you're having a rough week, what reminds you why you love what you do and keeps you pushing through?
Even on the toughest weeks, what keeps me going is knowing that I’m building something real, something that reflects my passion and values.
The relationships I’m forming, the positive impact I’m making, and the fact that people see and appreciate me fuels my motivation every day. That ongoing connection and the possibility of new collaborations keep the excitement alive and push me forward into new adventures.
Kiran’s journey with Refined Glow Aesthetics isn’t just about building a successful business- it’s about following your heart, staying true to your values, and having the courage to do things your own way. Her story is full of inspiration, from her commitment to quality and care to her resilience in the face of challenges.
As I wrapped up my chat (and one amazing cup of tea) with Kiran, one message really shines through: trust yourself, stay grounded in what matters most to you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way.
A huge thank you to Kiran for sharing her story and insights with such honesty. She’s a beautiful example of what’s possible when you combine passion, purpose, and a touch of glow. Her vulnerability and reaching out for support when times have been tough is a strong message.
