Have your say on student work experience in Solihull

The Solihull Employment and Skills Board (SESB) has been providing guidance on addressing the skills requirements of the Borough and overcoming key employment challenges for several years.

Solihull Chamber has announced they will be collaborating with the Board (SESB) to initiate a new project, aimed at enhancing student work experience, which is paramount in ensuring that the students today are adequately prepared for the challenges they will encounter in the workplace.

A recent survey of education providers in Solihull Borough revealed that as many as 50 per cent of students do not get any experience in the workplace before they are released from school or college into the world of work. The SESB is asking for help to understand the key challenges that employers face.

Will Shepherd (pictured), chair of Solihull Employment and Skills Board stated: “Good quality, inspirational work experience for school students can lead to informed decisions on future career directions along with future workforce options for employers.

“Unfortunately work experience can present problems for both employers and students – choice, availability, work-readiness and appropriate work to name a few. Give us your experiences so that we can develop a better way for students and employers in the future”.

SESB have produced a small survey which will help to provide a baseline knowledge of work experience from employers within the Borough and kindly request that all Solihull Chamber members take a two-minute action.

You can complete the brief survey available HERE. This will enable the Board to accurately match the challenges faced by institutions in placing students with employers who are in need of their skills for their future workforce.

All responses will remain anonymous, and the Board encourage candidness.

Samantha Frampton, head of Solihull Chamber added “We are pleased to be supporting this initiative to help address the inconsistencies in work experience provision and encourage Chamber members to inspire the next generation."
