Local authorities urged to boost learner support with fully funded teaching qualifications

Local authorities have a new opportunity to boost support for learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) through a fully funded teaching assistant (TA) qualification launching this September.

AIM Qualifications and Assessment Group is introducing a new Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry Diploma for Teaching Assistants, with a strong focus on SEND.

The group is actively seeking to partner with SEND teams in local authorities to roll out the qualification across regions.

Designed specifically for adults entering or progressing within TA roles, the qualification offers an accessible, non-apprenticeship route to SEND specialism — tailored to the real needs of schools and learners.

The diploma is aimed at addressing the growing demand for skilled SEND professionals and offers:

  • A fully funded pathway into TA roles, accessible to adult learners
  • In-depth SEND training, going beyond existing apprenticeship standards
  • A curriculum shaped by employers, covering key topics such as child development, inclusive teaching strategies, and current legislation
  • A practical way for schools to upskill existing staff or recruit new support personnel quickly and effectively

Faye Moore, head of business growth at AIM said: “This qualification is a powerful step forward in tackling the SEND skills gap.

“It opens doors for adults to step into rewarding, purposeful roles while helping schools and local authorities strengthen the support their learners and communities need most.”

Interested teams are encouraged to get in touch to discuss how the qualification could be delivered in their area.
