Performing Arts students at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) brought festive magic to the stage in December with their vibrant production of Puss in Boots.

The pantomime ran from 9 to 11 December in the college’s theatre space, Fleet Street Studios, and showcased the impressive talents of learners across multiple creative disciplines.

The production was a true cross-college collaboration. Students from Production Arts and Technical Theatre Management led on set design, lighting and sound, ensuring a fully professional theatre experience.

Their set designs were then brought to life by Creative students, who used sustainable materials to construct props and scenery—highlighting the college’s commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

Level 3 Performing Arts (Musical Theare) students, Lily Thompson and Jay Woodings helped to bring the much-loved story to life.

Lily took on the title role of Puss in Boots - speaking about the experience she said: “Playing Puss in Boots has been so much fun. We’ve all worked so hard, and it’s been a real team effort. You’re all working towards the same goal and want to help each other achieve that goal which is an amazing feeling.”

Jay played the character of Jack, Lily’s best friend on and off stage.

Jay was very shy before coming to college but after performing his first show in secondary school, he knew he had to perform more: “It enlightened something inside me and now my confidence has grown so much, it’s such a supportive community. You have to work so closely to put on a show and I feel safe to express myself.”

Both Lily and Jay have ambitious plans for the future and are currently preparing applications to study Musical Theatre at Leeds Conservatoire, with aspirations of performing in the West End.

Jay also highlighted the practical experience gained through the course, adding: “We are given great opportunities for work experience, which gives you a real insight into your chosen career and helps strengthen your personal statement for university applications, as well as experience in a wide range of performing styles such as cabaret and musicals.”

Catherine Palfreyman, performing arts course leader as BSDC, praised the students for their professionalism and creativity, saying: “This year’s pantomime has not only celebrated the students’ creative abilities but also provided invaluable industry experience, preparing them for future careers in the performing arts.

“We are incredibly proud of their commitment and the high standard of work they have produced.”
