President's column: Regional challenges
As many of you know I have started my new role as director of Business Development and Engagement at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, writes Robert Elliot.
While now representing 1,400 members across two counties it is very evident that the challenges faced are very similar to those just across the border in Solihull and Greater Birmingham.
In my first week I have learnt of the pressure on business and finance to meet grant deadlines.
The fact that enthusiastically sought out supply quotes are now being delayed getting over the line.
I have learnt of businesses prospering in some sectors as transactions are accelerated by government policy, and equally employers finding that while there might be people looking for work, they are being diligent in finding out how companies have treated their employees in these times.
To big areas of comments and no surprises here - Covid and Brexit.
This week I have learnt of innovation, frustration and costs rising.
Companies putting lateral flow testing into their businesses, trying to plan for staff shielding and self-isolating.
Companies experiencing huge prices increases in container shipment and supply chain timings being squeezed and produce perished due to ports and documents.
Whether we are dealing on a local or global basis, the principles of the Chamber of Commerce, it 's members, partner organisations, and local authorities remain the same. To support and to advise. Share best practice and solve problems.
Not for the first time in this column I signpost you to the Chamber's Covid and Brexit Hubs. If the answer is not there, someone will know someone who does.
Stay safe, follow the rules, lead by example, and support each other.
