Public speaking competition launched to empower Year Six pupils
In a celebration of young voices and diversity, the annual ‘Speak Up Speak Out!’ public speaking competition has been launched for Year Six pupils.
Happening at Millennium Point on 5 July, this empowering event provides a platform for children to make their voices heard on themes that matter deeply to them.
The competition, now in its fourth year, encourages participants to speak up and speak out under four broad themes:
- What makes me unique?
- My most significant moment
- The most inspirational person to me
- What equality means to me
These themes enable children to address a wide array of topics, fostering inclusivity and a celebration of individuality.
Past participants have bravely spoken about personal experiences such as being in care, fleeing war, coping with disabilities, coming out as LGBT, and addressing issues like racism and sexism.
Additionally, speeches have covered the impact of influential family members, teachers, or subjects that ignited passion.
The competition is judged by external experts in oracy and individuals whose professions rely on effective communication.
Notable figures like Jess Phillips MP have previously lent their expertise as judges, with Lord Hunt of Kings Heath returning to the judging panel this year. Inspirational speaker Zoe Bennett from Training Personified will also join as a judge.
"Speak Up Speak Out!" stands as a unique opportunity for children from diverse backgrounds, including some of our most economically deprived communities, to have their voices heard on issues close to their hearts.
The competition is organised by the prestigious Excelsior Multi-Academy Trust, who prioritise oracy education in all their schools, believing that fostering effective communication skills in these young individuals is essential for their personal and academic growth, empowering them to become confident and articulate members of society.
This event promises to be a powerful testament to the resilience and creativity of the next generation, showcasing the importance of amplifying youth voices in today's society.
