Teachers learn about career pathways in events industry
Businesses can develop deeper and more impactful engagement with the local community and develop their future talent pipeline by offering teachers the opportunity to learn more about their industry.
Angela Walsh (apprenticeship coordinator) and Claire Hawker (HR business partner) of the NEC Group hosted teaching staff from five Solihull schools.
Seventeen teaching staff from Daylesford Academy, Alderbrook School, Forest Oak, Solihull Academy and Triple Crown Centre, got a glimpse of the events industry with a visit to the NEC group recently.
Organised by Solihull Careers Hub at Solihull Council's Employment and Skills Team, it was designed for teachers to learn about the broad scope of careers in the events industry so they can use these insights in the curriculum helping students to gain a deeper understanding of opportunities and routes into employment.
Bridging the gap between education and business is pivotal for pupils to get a head start in their future careers. The teachers met with staff from Amadeus, The Ticket Factory and Events & Exhibitions, spanning roles in IT, engineering, catering, customer services and project management. Staff members of the NEC group shared their career journeys.
Angela shared a case study of a supported apprentice who started out as a porter and has now progressed to a level 3 chef apprenticeship. Teachers of students with further needs were encouraged to see the NEC living up to their commitment as a Disability Confident employer.
One of the teachers shared after the visit: “The job profile resources shared can be used in lessons. It was really encouraging to meet like-minded individuals at the NEC who want the best outcomes for our students. We had some great conversations and got to know each other better. We're keen to do more with the NEC. It would be great for our students.”
Site visits are informative and helpful for schools to develop training for an array of curriculum areas. If you are interested in connecting with local schools and shaping the future workforce, please get in touch with the Solihull Careers Hub.
