Failure to properly dispose of waste is toxifying our green spaces, damaging our living standards and polluting our oceans. The importance of better disposing of waste has therefore never been greater.

Evidence continues to show the worsening state of our natural environment. For example, as highlighted by the Rivers Trust, no rivers are considered as passing good chemical health or good overall health. Similar evidence is highlighted in research produced by the UN. In a report titled ‘From Pollution to Solution’ it’s stated that currently, plastic accounts for 85% of all marine litter. By 2040, this figure will be expected to triple, adding 23-37 million metric tons of waste into the ocean annually. These figures highlight the importance of managing the waste we produce.

Vicky Hemming, Head of Food, The Active Wellbeing Society 

Vicky Hemming is passionate about making a difference to communities and the environment via food, following a move four years ago to the third sector.  Vicky also has seven years catering experience and over twenty years of high-level  FMCG business planning and management experience.  

Responsible for leading a food team for a charity that uses surplus food (food that is edible but would have otherwise gone in to the bin), to run four community cafes and a food truck, Vicky also manages many food projects designed around sustainability and feeding communities in need.  She is well placed to lead on a current food waste redistribution project across the city.  This also draws on her current experience as a voluntary co-director for Incredible Surplus, a Birmingham-based CIC that sources and resdistributes over 20 tonnes of surplus food a month.

Vicky is driven to improve people’s wellbeing and outcomes through food.  Her tenacity and ability to lead, collaborate, build relationships and deliver projects, combined with her love of food and people, enables her to spot opportunities and see them to fruition. 

Many transferable skills were developed through 16 years spent working in a senior demand planning management role at global food manufacturer Mondelez (formerly Cadbury), such as the ability to be able to see the big picture while also being detail-oriented where it counts with strong leadership skills.

Denise Banks, Regional Head of Sales – Central and I&C, SUEZ Recycling and Recovery

Denise is the Regional Head of Sales at Suez Recycling and Recovery. SUEZ uses innovation and collaboration to implement smart and sustainable resource management solutions. Denise has over 32 years of experience working in the waste sector including roles working as a Commercial Director and a Finance Director.
