Closing the Gap: Unlocking Growth Opportunities

Women-led businesses remain significantly under represented in international trade. In the UK and particularly in the West Midlands, only a small proportion of exporters are female-led, despite clear evidence that diverse leadership teams drive stronger performance, innovation and resilience.

This is not a women-only issue. It is a missed economic opportunity that requires collective action from business leaders, founders, advisers, financial institutions, policymakers and academics of all genders.

Women in Export will bring businesses together for an open, evidence-led and solutions-focused conversations, and everyone is welcome to attend.

This is not a one-off event. Women in Export is an ongoing platform for dialogue, learning and connection, with follow-up meetings to support delegates beyond the room.

Why this conversation matters

Research shows female-led businesses are less likely to export – not due to lack of ambition or capability, but because of barriers such as:

  • Limited access to export finance and growth capital
  • Smaller international networks and fewer visible role models
  • Export support not always designed for different founder journeys

At the same time, women-led exporters often demonstrate strong long-term thinking, values-led leadership and deep customer insight – all highly effective in global markets.

Reducing the export participation gap could deliver a significant economic uplift for both the UK and the West Midlands. Achieving this requires inclusive thinking and practical action.

What to expect:

  • Connect with exporters, globally curious businesses, banks, academics and trade advisers
  • Hear from experts from banking, industry and academia using latest data and real lived experience in exporting
  • Why this gap needs closing and the value to the region
  • Barriers, enablers and what’s working
  • How people and institutions of all genders can drive progress
  • Explore what actions that you can take and what “de-gendering export” looks like in practice and help shape future Women in Export activity, including follow up sessions

Who should attend:

  • Leaders of businesses that export or are exploring international markets
  • Globally curious founders
  • All businesses that support exporters
  • Organisations committed to inclusive growth and international trade
