The search is on to find young people across the West Midlands who are doing amazing things to support their local communities and enter this year’s Young Active Citizens Awards.

Launched by The West Midlands Lieutenancy in 2020, the Young Active Citizen Awards are open to young people across the West Midlands who show dedication and passion to help others.

They acknowledge their outstanding contribution and celebrate the extraordinary things that they do – from fundraising to mentoring, volunteering to organising special events.

Embracing the Commonwealth values of humanity, equality and diversity, this year’s awards will celebrate the impact that young people are having on the communities in which they live and how they are helping to improve the cultural life of the wider region.

Winners receive a signed certificate from the Lord Lieutenant for the West Midlands and a trip to the House of Lords for afternoon tea.

There are three categories: up to 11 years old, 12-18 years old, 18-25 years old (maximum age 25 on 1 September 2023) and the closing date is 9 February 2024.

Last year’s Young Active Citizen Award winners included:

Millie Clarke (24) from Walsall for overcoming her own mental health challenges to get involved with her local community through Streetwatch patrol and West Midlands Police Cadets.

Inshira Khan (17) who is a young carer herself and actively involved in Queen Mary Grammar School’s ‘Change Your Mind’ student leadership programme.

Hannah Hussain (16) from Coventry who threw herself into supporting Cockshut Hill School and the wider community through planning events, fundraising and acting as a Wellbeing Peer Mentor

Leo Concannon (7) from Sutton Coldfield, who raised almost £1,500 from Silly Socks Day for the charity ‘Steps’.

The Lord Lieutenant, Sir John Crabtree OBE, said; “We know that every day young people are doing fantastic things to help others across the West Midlands and our awards celebrate this.

“It is heart-warming to hear their stories and the lengths they go to in order to make a positive contribution to help others. They are an example to us all and I urge young people across the region to get involved and enter this year’s awards.”
