Armed Forces Weekend celebrations announced at the National Memorial Arboretum
The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire is bringing back Armed Forces Weekend – a two-day programme of commemorative and celebratory activities, recognising the year-round service and sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community.
On Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 June, families are invited to enjoy an extensive range of free activities at the Arboretum. These include climbing walls, archery, a free-drop airbag, an assault course, soft play, and arts and crafts.
The celebrations will feature live music and spoken word from Talent in the Ranks – the Arboretum’s creative development programme for aspiring singers, songwriters and poets from within the Armed Forces community.
Working alongside performance experts, Talent in the Ranks supports participants as they develop their skills, build confidence, and share their unique lived experiences.
Energetic performances from The Year Was 1945... costumed performers will take visitors on a journey back in timesharing the stories of those who lived and served 80 years ago as the Nation marks the 80th anniversaries of VE and VJ Day.
With a rich line-up of themed activities across the site, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
Alongside the activities, visitors can also explore a range of food and gift stalls, featuring products from local makers and small businesses.
Neill Martin-Hoare, Head of Events at the National Memorial Arboretum said: “Our Armed Forces Weekend celebration will once again shine a spotlight on the outstanding contributions made by the Armed Forces community throughout the year.
“Visitors can enjoy a packed programme of free family-friendly activities and live performances throughout the weekend, including the talented artists currently participating in the Arboretum’s Talent in the Ranks programme.”
At 12pm on Saturday 28 June, a cohort of Ride to the Wall (RTTW) motorcyclists will ride into the Arboretum ahead of a ceremony where a cheque for the proceeds from RTTW 2024 will be presented. RTTW, held annually in October, has raised over £1.66 million for the Arboretum since its inception in 2008.
Armed Forces Day has once again been sponsored by Briggs Equipment UK, and the Ministry of Defence.
Entry to the National Memorial Arboretum and the Armed Forces Weekend event is free of charge.
Booking in advance via the Arboretum website is recommended to guarantee entry and save on parking (£5 in advance, £8 on the day).
