Birmingham Airport supports awards programme aimed at engaging with local schools
Birmingham Airport (BHX) has supported an awards programme aimed at engaging local schools with sustainability and environmental action.
The regional transport hub supported Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s Greener Schools Awards programme aimed at encouraging schools in the area to think globally and act locally.
Delivered in partnership with local businesses, the scheme promotes the implementation of impactful sustainable change within schools including recycling, litter picking and more environmentally friendly modes of transport.
As part of the scheme, which the airport has supported since 2018, representatives from Birmingham Airport have attended a programme of celebratory events, provided feedback on entries and funded prize plaques which are awarded to accredited schools.
This year, the airport supported Kingshurst Primary School and Windy Arbor Primary School with their Greener School Award entries, providing insight on how teachers and pupils can become even more sustainable.
Following this tailored support, both schools attended Solihull Council’s ‘Your Future Chelmsley Wood’ schools celebration event to showcase their inspiring work on environmental sustainability and community engagement.
From eco-teams and recycled fashion shows to bee gardens and litter campaigns, students demonstrated how local action can contribute to global goals.
The event featured performances, discussion, and interactive sessions, all aimed at encouraging young people to think globally and act locally.
Pupils shared their achievements in improving air quality, promoting active travel, and enhancing green spaces in their communities.
Commenting on the Solihull Greener School Award, Tom Denton, head of sustainability at Birmingham Airport, said: “We’ve been a proud supporter of Solihull Council’s Greener School Awards for seven years now as we truly recognise the value in engaging our local communities with sustainable action and recognising those that are committed to making a positive environmental change.
“This year, we were delighted to support Kingshurst Primary School and Windy Arbor Primary School with their respective award entries, and it’s been great to witness both pupils and teachers implement creative greener solutions that will undoubtedly have a real impact on a grass-roots level.
“Here at Birmingham Airport, we too are working to be more sustainable ahead of our pledged deadline to become net zero by 2033, so ensuring our local communities are engaged with us on this journey is crucial.
“We thank Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council for delivering such an impactful scheme and we look forward to continuing our support in the future.”
