Operational staff, training teams and senior directors from across Serco’s justice and immigration division gathered at the Serco Justice and Immigration Staff Training CPD Conference.

The conference was held at the Lilleshall national sports centre in Shropshire to explore professional development in high-pressure operational environments.

Among the speakers was Birmingham-based consultancy founder Jules Mitchell, creator of The Mental Wealth Revolution, who delivered a keynote session examining human capacity under pressure.

Staff working in custodial environments, immigration services and detainee operations regularly face fast-moving situations that require calm authority, situational awareness and sound professional judgement.

Jules’ session focused on how individuals maintain clarity of thinking and effective decision-making while operating within sustained operational demand.

During her session, she explored how the brain, body and nervous system function together under sustained pressure, and how these biological responses can shape thinking, communication, behaviour and decision-making in real-world situations.

Rather than approaching the topic solely through the lens of resilience or wellbeing, the session examined the human systems that underpin performance.

When individuals operate in high-load environments for prolonged periods, the body’s threat-detection systems can activate protective survival responses.

These shifts in the nervous system can narrow attention, heighten emotional reactivity and reduce behavioural flexibility.

In operational settings, this can influence how situations are interpreted, how communication unfolds and how quickly decisions are made.

Understanding how these brain–body systems function allows professionals to recognise their internal responses earlier and apply practical strategies that support clearer thinking and steadier decision-making during challenging moments.

Jules said: “In high-pressure environments, performance is not shaped by knowledge alone. It is shaped by the capacity of the human system carrying that responsibility.

“When pressure rises, the brain, body and nervous system respond together and understanding those responses allows people to maintain clarity, judgement and professional authority when it matters most.”

Jules is an award-winning Birmingham-based founder, educator and consultant, and the creator of The Mental Wealth Revolution, a consultancy focused on strengthening human capacity, the internal ability to think clearly, regulate pressure and operate effectively in demanding environments.

Through her work, Jules helps individuals and organisations understand how biological, cognitive and emotional systems influence performance under pressure, particularly in sectors where clear thinking, sound judgement and effective communication are essential.
