Birmingham’s dragon boat race returns with new charity at the helm
A much-loved city event will set sail in a new direction as Birmingham Hospice officially takes over the annual Dragon Boat Race, previously run by the Edgbaston Convention Rotary.
The event will be held on Saturday, 27 September at the Edgbaston Reservoir.
Teams from across Birmingham are invited to come together- whether friends, families, or colleagues - to compete in this exhilarating water-sport challenge, all to raise money for Birmingham Hospice, which provides expert palliative and end of life care to local people.
Participants need no prior experience.
All training, safety gear, and equipment will be provided, ensuring a safe and exciting day for all involved.
Spectators are also encouraged to attend, with plenty of food stalls, music and family friendly entertainment available throughout the day.
Samantha Julius, events officer at Birmingham Hospice, said: “We are honoured to take over this incredible event from Edgbaston Convention Rotary.
“We’re proud to build on their amazing legacy and continue bringing the community together at this unforgettable experience.”
The day will culminate in a grand finale where the fastest teams from the initial heats go head-to-head to be crowned the 2025 Birmingham Hospice Dragon Boat Race Champions.
David Aspinall, fundraising lead and former president of Edgbaston Convention Rotary, shared his endorsement.
He said: “We are thrilled Birmingham Hospice is taking over this much-loved event.
"We were so impressed after their community fundraisers visited us last year and we learnt more about their charitable work.
“We’ve fundraised for the hospice before and know how vital their services are for the people of Birmingham.”
By taking part, participants will directly help provide compassionate care for people living with a terminal diagnosis, helping Birmingham Hospice continue to make every moment matter.
