Birmingham 2026 has gone down as the biggest European Athletics Championships ever staged, with 1,645 athletes competing for 157 medals across 50 events.

The seven-day competition produced two world records, four European records, 11 Championship records and 40 national records, and pulled in 218,135 spectators, with three evening sessions selling out completely.

Great Britain and Northern Ireland equalled their best-ever gold medal tally, taking nine golds and 19 medals in total to finish second in the standings.

Coverage on the BBC reached 17.2 million viewers across TV and iPlayer, peaking at 4.2 million for the men's 4x400m final, with audiences clocking up 63 million hours of viewing across the broadcaster's platforms.

It was the first time the UK has hosted the Championships, delivered by Athletic Ventures - a joint venture between UK Athletics, London Marathon Events and The Great Run Company.

Athletic Ventures shouldered the full financial risk for the Championships itself, rather than relying on government or the host city - thought to be a first for a European Athletics Championships.

Organisers say any resulting surplus will be reinvested into growing participation in athletics nationwide.

Away from the track, children made up roughly a fifth of attendees, with schools and community groups given thousands of free or discounted tickets.

Over 5,000 people ran in the Unity Challenge 1K and 5K, and Champions Square welcomed 39,000 visitors across its four days of programming.

The Beyond social impact scheme also reached more than 150 schools, offering Olympian visits and free taster sessions in athletics.

Jack Buckner, CEO of UK Athletics and co-founder of Athletic Ventures, said: “The UK’s first European Championships in Birmingham has truly raised the bar for the event, setting new records with the biggest event in the Championships’ history, outstanding performances, a sell-out weekend, huge TV audiences and massive fan engagement on social and digital channels.

“We would like to thank European Athletics and our partners and stakeholders at UK Sport, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Combined Authority for all their support in staging this record-breaking Championships.

“We’d also like to salute and thank the 1,438 volunteers who played such an important part in creating a wonderful experience for athletes and spectators.”
