Birmingham to host UK Bamboo summit
The sixth UK Bamboo Summit will be coming to Birmingham, bringing leaders and innovators from the UK and around the world to explore how bamboo could move from botanical wonder to mainstream UK material.
The summit, takes place on Friday 30 October, alongside a public programme running from 28 to 30 October.
Called Bam-BOO!, the programme will take over the gardens as part of its Noticing Nature project. Families can follow The Secret Life of Bamboo trail through the Gardens to discover some of bamboo’s surprising properties and uses, before encountering Bo, an incredible 13ft bamboo and willow puppet roaming through the Gardens.
Bam-BOO! is included with standard Garden admission, while the UK Bamboo Summit is separately ticketed.
Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Outdoor Places Unusual Spaces (OPUS) have been developing Noticing Nature as a year-round programme using outdoor arts, participation and play to help people look more closely at the natural world.
The UK Bamboo Summit 2026 will bring together people already leading the development of bamboo in the UK with international expertise and new voices interested in its potential.
The day-long summit will look beyond bamboo as a plant to explore its potential across the built environment, product design, sustainable growing, biodiversity, cities, public policy and culture.
The developing programme will bring international inspiration into conversation with emerging UK practice, asking what Britain can learn from places where bamboo industries are already significantly more developed.
The afternoon will move into facilitated working groups before concluding with shared next steps and commitments for bamboo in the UK.
The Summit itself will extend beyond talks and panels, with artistic work in progress, a marketplace of bamboo products and opportunities for delegates to encounter elements of the public programme. The day also begins with the opportunity to explore Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ own bamboo collection.
Sara Blair-Manning, chef executive of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, said: “Botanical Gardens have an important role to play in sharing the importance of plants for the people, the places we live and the planet.
“What makes this programme particularly exciting is that we can explore these aspects at so many different levels – from families discovering bamboo through play and making, to researchers, designers, growers, and businesses coming together to consider its potential at scale.
“The Gardens is a place for curiosity and discovery, and hosting BAM-Boo! alongside the UK Bamboo Summit which gives us a wonderful opportunity to connect our plant collections with new ideas, new audiences, and a much wider conversation about how plants can contribute to the future of our cities and our lives. We hope to see many people there.”
