Birmingham women’s charity takes part in match funding campaign
Anawim – Birmingham’s Centre for Women is taking part in the Big Give’s Women and Girls match funding campaign this October.
The charity is aiming to raise £5,000 – which will then be doubled within a week. The money will help Anawim support women to leave abuse behind.
Big Give is a registered charity that runs match funded campaigns for charities and special causes at key moments across the year.
By connecting charities to match funders including philanthropists, foundations, corporates and the public, Big Give helps them double their donations.
Anawim works with more than 2,000 women a year, most of whom have experienced abuse: domestic, sexual, economic, or another form.
It is one of the most common reasons for women to visit the drop-in centre, and more than half of women in prison have experienced domestic abuse.
Aside from the obvious physical effects it is also hugely detrimental to women’s mental health.
The charity works with women in a variety of ways, holistically, and dependant on their circumstances.
Drop-in staff signposts appropriate support and listens to concerns. In some cases, a caseworker may accompany a woman to court and speak up there.
Women can access courses and counselling at the centre, and Anawim also offers Domestic Violence Courses in prison.
Any donations made between the 8th and 15th of October will be matched by Big Give’s Champions.
Joy Doal (pictured), Anawim CEO said: “We’re all really excited about this opportunity – and are very grateful to the Big Give for giving us the chance to double our donations!
“We know the pernicious effect abuse can have and £10,000 would make a huge difference to the women we work with. With your support we hope to reach that goal.”
