Businesses trading with the European Union (EU) have just over a week until next import and export customs controls come into force.

From 1 January 2022, full customs controls will be introduced for goods moving between Great Britain and the EU, and for goods exported from Great Britain to Ireland.

Changes coming into force from New Year 's Day include:

  1. Full customs import declarations will be required at the point of entry alongside payment of the relevant tariffs
  2. Customs controls at all ports and other border locations
  3. Requirements for proof of origin must be met for those trading with zero tariffs
  4. UK 's commodity codes changing
  5. Goods Vehicle Movement Service will become operational for EU-GB goods movements
  6. Pre-notification required for imported animal products, and high risk food and feed not of animal origin

Erin Henwood, policy advisor at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said: “Despite all attention currently being focused on the latest phase of the pandemic, it is crucial that businesses are aware of and prepared for the raft of incoming changes to which they must adhere.

“Many businesses understandably remain confused and concerned by the new requirements, as demonstrated by analysis from the latest Quarterly Business Report, and are hoping to see more support provided by Government in the coming weeks and months to ease the next stage of the transition.

“We hope to see more done to inform local businesses about what to expect given that many are still sharing their Brexit-related concerns.

“Action could range from a detailed communications plan to a further extension of easements to enable businesses to better prepare, particularly with the pandemic still having a devastating economic impact on many firms. ”

The Chamber offers specific trading and customs advice through its international team, as well as comprehensive updates and information on the Brexit Hub.
