Building surveyors find space to grow at Custard Factory
Chartered surveying firm Space Building Surveyors have announced their relocation to brand new premises at the Custard Factory in Digbeth just 18 months after launching their business.
The growing firm, run by Toby Bowser and Stephen Seeney, is swapping its former office on Temple Street for more space and the creative buzz of the Green House Building in Digbeth as part of ambitious growth plans.
Toby Bowser, who founded the firm in 2022 explains what the move represents: “We’re not typical building surveyors - and we wanted our office to reflect our values and creativity. The Custard Factory is incredibly vibrant, creative and entrepreneurial so it’s a much better fit for our business.”
Space, who are on a mission to bring a fresh approach to surveying with their straight forward advice also have plans to expand their team and needed bigger premises to grow.
Director and surveyor Stephen Seeney said: “This move is the first step towards our ambitious growth plans.
“We’re looking for another surveyor to join our team and we want to attract someone with our forward-thinking values. We think the awesome facilities and thriving location of the new office will be a real selling point for new team members.”
Since landlord negotiations are something of a speciality for Space Building Surveyors, the landlord was also an important factor for Toby and Stephen.
Oval Real Estate, the landlord for the Green House, specialises in unlocking potential in unexpected places and has been actively managing assets in Digbeth since 2017.
Jo Salmon, head of estates at Oval Real Estate is excited to have Space Building Surveyors as tenants.
He said: “We believe there’s no such a thing as a typical development and the Greenhouse is no different. We know that Toby and his team aren’t typical chartered surveyors so it’s the perfect partnership.”
Commercial property agent Ed Siddal Jones is also enthusiastic about the vibe in Digbeth at the moment: “Digbeth is such a vibrant and fast-moving area, it’s perfect for ambitious businesses like Space. And with plans to extend the tram service to Digbeth, this is just the start of things to come.
“Space have had the keys less than a month but Toby is already inspired by the new location.
“As a surveyor, I love how buildings can contribute to the atmosphere of a place. The Custard Factory is such an energetic place to be - it’s full of inspiration and I love seeing all the amazing artwork around Digbeth every day.”
