Burton Albion snap up Wrexham midfielder on loan
Burton Albion have signed Andy Cannon (pictured) on loan from Sky Bet Championship side Wrexham until the end of the season.
The 29-year-old midfielder has been with the Red Dragons since 2022, winning three successive promotions with the Welsh side.
Brewers head coach Gary Bowyer said: “Delighted to get this one over the line, we have to thank Phil Parkinson and Wrexham for allowing us to have Andy as well as our owners for their continued support.
“Andy will bring a winning mentality and his experience will help the group. I have followed his career from when he was at Rochdale and his energy and his ability to score important goals is what I am looking forward to seeing.”
Cannon started his career as a youngster with Stockport County, before turning professional with Rochdale and playing 127 games across five seasons for the Greater Manchester side.
He moved to Portsmouth in the 2019, going on to make 79 appearances for the League One team.
Missing just three games in his final season on the south coast, Pompey missed out on the play-offs by two points.
Newly promoted Hull City signed him in the summer of 2021, where he would play 10 times and score on his debut during a 4-1 win at Preston North End. Towards the end of the campaign, he joined National League Stockport County on loan.
He would help the Hatters win the fifth-tier title before returning to the same division with Wrexham the following season.
After winning another league title with the Red Dragons, he was joined by new Burton Albion teammate George Evans.
The pair often combined in midfield as the Welsh side secured promotion from League Two.
Last season, Cannon featured against the Brewers at the Pirelli Stadium alongside Sebastian Revan as Wrexham beat Albion 1-0 in December.
They would go on to secure a third promotion as runners-up of League One, despite Andy suffering a knee injury that would keep him out for the second half of the season.
On joining Burton Albion, Andy said: “I’m delighted that it’s all done and I can’t wait to get going. I just want to get as many games in as I can and help the team.”
Cannon will take the 42 shirt. He will be available for the game on 31 January against Cardiff City, which supporters can buy tickets for here.
