Burton charity supports over 200 children in Kenya with holistic education and care

A Burton-based charity has supported more than 200 children and their communities in Kenya, offering holistic development and care for the past 17 years.

The Footprints Family, founded in 2008 by Burton resident Kerry Watson, provides housing, education, healthcare, emotional support, and community empowerment in rural Kenya.

What started with Kerry purchasing a plot of land has grown into a thriving, self-sustaining community powered entirely by solar energy—delivering clean water, electricity, and opportunity to those who need it most.

Kerry said: “Our aim is to help people break the cycle of poverty, build self-belief, and foster hope for future generations,”.

The inspiration for The Footprints Family came from Kerry’s own life.

She was adopted during the forced adoptions of the 1960s and experienced instability early on, with her adoptive parents separating when she was just four.

Years later, during a visit to Africa, she encountered children living in extreme poverty and without permanent homes—an experience that compelled her to act.

Since then, The Footprints Family has supported hundreds of children with long-term care, education, and life skills.

Among them is Raphael, who was homeless ten years ago and now holds business management qualifications, working within the organisation to mentor younger children.

Raphael said: “This programme gave me a second chance at life. Now, I’m helping others find theirs.”

The charity is now calling for donations to expand its life-changing work.

Contributions help provide children with nutritious meals, access to healthcare, school uniforms, and essential emotional support.

  • £10 provides regular meals for a child in need
  • £50 funds a term’s education and school uniform
  • £100 supports four families with dignity aid packages
  • £1,000 helps fund new facilities and youth support initiatives
