Burton cricketer returns from South Africa with silver medal
Burton young cricketer Eva Benstead has returned from South Africa with a silver medal after helping England achieve their best Junior World Series indoor cricket result for 15 years.
Eva (pictured) was backed by communications consultancy MIH Group, where the 13-year-old represented England’s U15 girls during the eight-day competition.
Eva featured in seven of England’s matches during the tournament, making important contributions as the team progressed all the way to the final.
England enjoyed victories over hosts South Africa and New Zealand during the competition before defeating the Kiwis by 29 runs in the semi-final to secure their place in the showpiece match.
They eventually missed out on the title to a strong Australian side, but returned home with silver medals after a memorable tournament.
Eva said: “I had an amazing time in South Africa with a great group of girls, and to get to the final was really special.
“We made memories that we’ll all treasure for a long time and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported me, especially MIH Group. I’m so grateful.”
Eva first approached MIH earlier this year seeking support towards the cost of representing her country.
Unlike many representative sporting opportunities, indoor cricket does not receive the same level of financial backing as the outdoor game, meaning players and their families have to fund much of the cost of flights, accommodation and kit themselves.
Rather than simply asking for sponsorship, Eva visited MIH Spaces and presented her case to the team, explaining what the opportunity meant to her and suggesting ways she could also support the business in return.
Her maturity, determination and enthusiasm impressed the MIH team, which agreed to become her main business sponsor.
MIH managing director Jo Yeaman said: “When Eva first came to see us, we were struck not only by what she had already achieved at such a young age, but by the way she went about asking for our support.
“She presented brilliantly to the team and it was obvious how much representing England meant to her, so it was an easy decision for us to get behind her.
“To then watch Eva and her teammates go all the way to a world final was fantastic. Winning a silver medal while representing your country at 13 is an achievement she should be immensely proud of, and everyone at MIH sends huge congratulations to Eva and the whole England squad.”
Eva plays outdoor cricket for Dunstall CC and Duffield CC and indoor cricket for Derby Cobras.
She earned her England call-up following an intensive winter training programme with Action Indoor Cricket England’s Emerging Player Programme.
She is also part of Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s girls’ pathway at U13 level.
The next Junior World Series is due to be held in Sri Lanka in 2029.
