Burton rehabilitation centre opens doors to showcase impact of residential recovery

Burton-based BAC O’ Connor Centre has launched an open house initiative, giving residents the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how residential care contributes to recovery, public health and community safety.

The event will take place on Tuesday, 22 September from 10am to 4pm.

Throughout the day, attendees will be able to meet the Assessment, Detox, Therapy, Residential and Recovery Academy teams, ask questions and learn more about the different stages of a person’s treatment journey.

Attendees also have the opportunity to sit in a 45-minute treatment group session, running at set times throughout the day, and hear directly from people with lived experience about what led them to BAC O’Connor, their journey through rehab, and how their lives have changed since.

Other highlights of the day will include a tour of the residential environment, a visit to Langan’s Tea Rooms, meet trustees of the O’Connor Gateway Trust and hear about the important role families can play in recovery.

Kendra Gray, chief executive officer at BAC O’Connor Centre, said: “Behind every person who comes through our doors is a story.

“There is often a family who has been affected too, people who have worried, hoped and sometimes wondered whether things could ever really change. Residential rehabilitation can be the place where that change begins.

“We see people arrive at BAC O’Connor at incredibly difficult points in their lives, and we have the privilege of watching what can happen when they are given time, safety, understanding and the right support.

“We see confidence return, relationships begin to heal and people start to believe in themselves and their future again. That is what residential rehabilitation can make possible – not simply completing a period of treatment, but creating the foundations for a very different life.

“Open Houses is our opportunity to bring people beyond the front door and show them what that really looks like. We want commissioners, policymakers and system leaders to meet our teams, hear directly from people with lived experience, see our therapeutic approaches in action and understand the journey through treatment and beyond.

“Because decisions about pathways, services and funding are ultimately decisions that affect real people, their families and their futures.

“At a time when need is increasingly complex and access to residential treatment remains challenging, we cannot lose sight of the hope that the right treatment can offer. Recovery is about so much more than stopping the use of drugs or alcohol.

“It is about reconnecting with family, rebuilding relationships, rediscovering self-worth, finding purpose and beginning to believe that life can be different.

“We are incredibly proud of what happens at BAC O’Connor every day, but more than anything, we are proud of the people who walk through our doors and find the courage to change their lives.

“I hope that everyone who visits us during Open Houses leaves understanding not only the value of residential rehabilitation, but the very human difference it can make – to an individual, to a family and, ultimately, to a whole community.”
