Burton Washlands given new lease of life
Burton upon Trent’s Washlands have been given a striking new lease of life, transforming the riverside into a destination where families, wildlife and the wider community can come together.
This major upgrade connects Burton’s town centre to its riverbank and marks a key milestone in the town’s regeneration.
Burton upon Trent’s riverside has been transformed into a vibrant destination where families, wildlife, and the community can thrive together.
The newly upgraded Washlands connect the town centre to the riverbank, offering safe, accessible spaces for play, relaxation, and exploration.
This major project marks a key milestone in Burton’s ongoing regeneration.
Visitors can now enjoy a timber play area designed around natural play principles, new boardwalks, clearly marked trails, and improved access throughout the riverside.
The Garden of Remembrance has also been redesigned with fresh landscaping, seating, and pathways, providing a calm spot to pause, stroll, or take in scenic riverside views.
Ecological improvements have strengthened the Washlands’ natural environment and resilience to flooding.
New wetlands and carefully planned planting across the river and meadows create habitats that support local wildlife, while helping to manage water naturally.
These enhancements create a greener, more resilient riverside where people and nature can flourish side by side.
The Washlands project is part of East Staffordshire’s wider regeneration programme, aimed at making Burton’s town centre more connected, attractive, and sustainable.
Alongside improvements to the High Street and nearby public spaces, the project enhances the town’s appeal for residents, visitors, and businesses, while preserving Burton’s distinctive character.
Delivered by Ground Control Limited and designed by Binnies, the project was funded through a joint Local Enterprise Partnership bid, the Environment Agency’s Flood Defence Scheme, and East Staffordshire Borough Council capital investment.
Throughout construction, pedestrian access was maintained wherever possible, ensuring the area remained open and accessible.
The Washlands and Garden of Remembrance are now fully open to the public, with further planting and habitat enhancements planned in the coming months to ensure the space continues to flourish as a community hub and natural haven.
Cllr Louise Walker, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Development, said: "The Washlands project is a landmark achievement for Burton, delivering a riverside space that balances play, community, and conservation. We have created somewhere that is accessible, welcoming, and true to its natural character. It’s a destination the whole town can be proud of, benefiting residents, visitors, and wildlife for years to come."
Residents are invited to explore the new Washlands and Garden of Remembrance and enjoy the improved trails, play areas, and wildlife habitats.
