The UK Government has announced that businesses will be given an additional two years to apply new product safety marking.

The UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking was introduced as part of the UK 's own robust regulatory framework and businesses were required to comply by 31st December 2022.

However, the Government will continue to recognise the CE marking for two years, allowing businesses until 31st December 2024 to prepare for the UKCA marking.

The UKCA marking shows that products comply with the UK 's product safety regulations which are designed to protect customers.

To support manufacturers, the Government is also reviewing the wider product safety framework, ensuring the burdens on businesses are minimised while keeping the UK 's system up to date with new innovative methods such as e-labelling.

Speaking about the update, GBCC 's policy advisor Erin Henwood (pictured) said: “The Government 's announcement will undoubtedly be welcomed by businesses across the country who are heavily focused on navigating the current economic crisis. Extending the deadline by two years provides firms with greater flexibility, enabling them to concentrate on recovery and growth.

“Increasing divergence between the UK and the European Union 's regulatory framework has increased the complexity and cost for businesses trading internationally, and I am looking forward to exploring this issue in more detail at our upcoming event, The Brexit Series: Regulatory Divergence, next month. ”

The Brexit Series: Regulatory Divergence will take place on Thursday, 8 December from 9.00am to 10.30am at RSM UK, with delegates having the opportunity to hear from speakers such as Brad Ashton (customs and international trade partner, RSM UK), Professor Martin Levermore MBE (Founder and CEO, Medical Devices Technology International), and Kieran Laird (Partner, Gowling WLG).

It is the second event in a range of activity delivered by GBCC and supported by the West Midlands Combined Authority.
