Busy Tamworth roundabout junction set for £1.5m improvement scheme
A busy roundabout junction in Tamworth is set to undergo a major reconstruction from this week giving it lasting improvements for years to come.
Work begins on the Coleshill Street island in Fazeley tomorrow (Tuesday May 6) and will include the roundabout approaches, including Lichfield Street and Atherstone Street on the B5404.
Staffordshire County Council is investing £1.15million in the scheme, which will see reconstruction of the roundabout road surface and approaches to it. The seven-week scheme is scheduled for completion on Friday 20 June.
The first phase of the scheme will take place from this week until Friday 23 May, with work being carried out between 7.30am to 7pm and some traffic management in place.
From Tuesday 27 May the second phase will begin. Full closures of the roundabout overnight will then be needed so that work can be carried out safely and as quickly as possible, between 7pm and 6am. No weekend works are planned and diversion signs will be in place.
Staffordshire County Council’s assistant director for highways James Bailey said: “This is a major scheme on a busy junction in Tamworth with considerable investment, bringing lasting improvements.
“While we know this scheme will be welcomed by the local community, there will be some inevitable and unavoidable disruption for which we apologise. The team will be carrying out the main part of the road reconstruction overnight when traffic volumes are at their lowest to minimise disruption.
“We’d like to thank people for their patience while work takes place and to allow for additional journey time if they need to travel through the junction.”
