A former serviceman has launched a new career with support from Staffordshire Jobs & Careers Service run by the county council.

Paul Alcorn (pictured), a retired Army Captain who served for 25 years, secured his new job with the authority’s Learning and Organisational Development department.

After a military career that took him across the globe from Canada to Malaysia, Paul was looking for a change that would allow him to settle down with his family.

The 46-year-old from Stafford was introduced to the service in August 2024 where he received advice on changing careers and some support with his CV.

After a meeting with key members of the People Solutions team, Paul was encouraged to apply for one of the vacancies with the Learning and Organisational Development Department.

Following a successful interview, Paul was offered the job which he started in January 2025.

Talking about the support he received, Paul said: “The Staffordshire Jobs & Careers Service was very welcoming, especially the team from Talent and Resourcing, with their regular updates and informed support.  They gave me a real supportive veterans vibe which encouraged me to join the council.

“The army was a life changing, fulfilling experience giving me the opportunity to learn lots of skills and gain lots of qualifications. I knew I had lots of soft skills, I just needed help and the opportunity to transfer them to other areas of work.

“I really enjoy the job and would urge others to get in touch with the team. Without this programme, I might not have found work.”

Martin Murray, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills at Staffordshire County Council, said: “Paul’s experience is a fantastic example of how Staffordshire’s Jobs and Careers Service can arm people with the confidence and skills to change career or find work.

“Getting people into work and good jobs is our priority, it benefits not only people themselves but the county’s economy too.

“The service is a vital part of that process and has already helped hundreds of individuals.

“I’d urge anyone looking for a change in career, to upskill, or to find a job to contact the team.  The advisers are standing by ready to help.”
