Chamber calls for missing details on vaccine passports

Business leaders have raised concerns about the government 's lack of detail of which venues will need to introduce vaccine passports from September.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed during a press conference last night that from 30 September, individuals must have proof that they have been fully vaccinated in order to enter nightclubs and other crowded venues in England.

Vaccines Minister, Nadhim Zahawi, also clarified that a negative lateral flow test will no longer be sufficient to enter nightclubs from the autumn.

On Monday evening, nightclubs were permitted to reopen, for the first time since March 2020, as part of stage four of the government 's roadmap out of lockdown.

Henrietta Brealey (pictured), chief executive of Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce, said that the Prime Minister made only a “vague reference ” to which events and organisations needed to adhere to the new system.

She said: “At the start of the year, the Vaccine Minister made it clear that there were no plans in place to introduce vaccine passports. However, with case rates of the Delta variant rising sharply, it was no surprise to see the Government make another notable policy U-turn.

“As is often the case, the headline statement lacks the appropriate detail required for such a complex landscape.

“Policymakers at Westminster need to be crystal clear with businesses as to which venues will be expected to introduce vaccine passports and what the specific process will entail in order to give customers the confidence they need to go ahead and enjoy the types of experiences they 've missed for so many months. ”
