Chamber invites people to fast for a day during Ramadan
The Asian Business Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents in the city to fast for a day during the month of Ramadan on 4 March.
People taking part in the event are encouraged to abstain from food and drink from dawn and open the fast during sunset with colleagues.
This event is open to members and non-members who wish to celebrate diversity, promote unity, and experience the spirit of Ramadan. It will start at 5.30 pm at Shakespeare Martineau.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community.
A commemoration of Muhammad's first revelation, the annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.
Fasting from dawn to sunset is obligatory for all adult Muslims who are not acutely or chronically ill, travelling, elderly, breastfeeding, diabetic, or menstruating.
The predawn meal is referred to as suhur, and the nightly feast that breaks the fast is called iftar. It is common practice to follow the timetable of the closest country in which night can be distinguished from day.
Attendees can engage in meaningful conversations and foster understanding through interfaith dialogue sessions, learn about the holy month of Ramadan and network with individuals.
