Chamber members help upgrade hospital staff room
The staff room at the Lions Ward in Kings College Hospital’s children’s unit has been repainted and refurbished to create a more welcoming environment for the paediatric staff, thanks to a collaborative project involving Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce members SUEZ recycling and recovery UK, Compass Group and PwC UK.
Led by SUEZ recycling and recovery’s South East account management team Vaughan Fountain, Leah Poultney and Gemma Dickens, the goal was to improve the look and feel of the space, making it more comfortable and supportive for hospital staff during their breaks.
The room, used daily by the ward’s healthcare professionals, had become dated, with worn furniture and bare walls.
The team prepared and cleaned the walls before repainting them in a suitable calming colour, and installed new shelves for kitchen equipment.
The work was planned to ensure minimal disruption to the ward, with blinds to be replaced at a later date.
SUEZ account director Leah Poultney said: “The healthcare professionals at King’s College Hospital go above and beyond every single day.
“We were pleased to work with our partners, PwC and Compass, to make this happen, and to contribute in a small way to supporting the wellbeing of the team on the Lions Ward.”
Furniture, shelves and blinds were generously donated by PwC UK.
Compass, the hospital’s facilities management provider, supported the delivery and coordination of the work on site.
The upgraded staff room is intended to provide a brighter, tidier and more relaxing space, helping boost morale on the children’s ward and offering staff a pleasant space to pause during busy shifts.
According to Compass Group’s Medirest contract manager Carina Franco, having the new furniture courtesy of PwC gave the staff a relaxing and calm place to stay during their much-needed breaks.
She said: “SUEZ and our team here at King’s did an amazing job for the hard-working nurses in the children’s ward.”
King’s College ward manager, Sister Ella, expressed her appreciation to the whole team for their generosity and hard work in revitalising the staff room, adding that it has made a real difference to the staff.
