Chamber members pledge to support future talent
Two members of the Lichfield and Tamworth Chamber of Commerce executive committee are encouraging local businesses to engage with the next generation of talent.
A number of schools from across the region include Chase Terrace Academy, Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, Lichfield Cathedral School and Landau Forte Academy continue to host careers events, mock interview sessions and Dragons Den-style projects in which businesses volunteer time to speak to students, offer advice and discuss opportunities.
John Moore (pictured), managing director of Fruition Accountants, and Sharon McCormick, clinical director of The Listening Centre, both based in Lichfield city centre, took part in sessions organised by Julie Poppleton, careers Director at Chase Terrace Academy.
Both were keen to state how beneficial and rewarding they found the experience.
John Moore said: “As a professional services business employing a number of locally based accountancy staff, I found it very inspiring to experience first-hand the next generation of apprentices and graduates at recent school engagement events.
“Our business is always looking for talent in young people that could join the company and seeing and hearing the quality of our potential future employees was very inspiring. ”
Sharon McCormick said: “Our line of business is specifically focused on well-being support, and after such a tough time for young people during the pandemic, seeing them emerge from this with positive goals, forward-thinking attitudes, and a genuine interest in pursuing their preferred vocations at this stage in their journey was very satisfying.
“However, the only way young people can continue to grow is for more local companies to invest time and effort in listening to the needs of the next generation as well as continuing to strive to open up opportunities across the economy for their development. ”
A key pillar of activity through 2023 planned by the Lichfield and Tamworth Chamber of Commerce, led by president, Fiona Rouse of PI-KEM, is to continue to highlight the importance of supporting young people, as well as encouraging employees to volunteer to help local schools or colleges in inspiring young people of all ages.
