Chamber’s summer work placement scheme provides opportunities for students
Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) is hosting a group of work experience students over the summer.
The students are set to work with various Chamber departments, attended events and learned about how GBCC supports members and the wider business community.
The first set of students – Nadia and Summer – completed their placements over the first week of July.
They are year 10 students from Balaam Wood Academy, part of part of King Edward VI Foundation Schools – whom the GBCC has supported over the past years.
Nadia said: “Work experience at the GBCC has helped me see the different personalities, jobs and qualities of people in a work place.
“It has helped me incredibly with meeting people and learning how life is outside of school. The events team and many other employees have helped me boost my confidence with speaking to new people.”
Summer said: “My work experience at GBCC has helped me so much with public speaking and meeting new people.
“I was so grateful for all of the events and introductions to the departments and employees as it has made me realise the job variety to business and has made me consider a career in it.”
GBCC policy and projects coordinator Francesca Thomas, who handles work experience within the Chamber, said: “This placement has been a fantastic opportunity for Nadia and Summer, providing valuable hands-on experience and real insight into life at GBCC.
“We’re proud to have supported Balaam Wood Academy over the past few years, and we believe this partnership will continue to open doors for young people while strengthening the vital link between education and the workplace.
“Working with such a committed and supportive school makes a real difference, and we’re truly grateful for their ongoing dedication to preparing students for the world of work.
“Thank you to all involved with our Chamber work Experience programme this year.”
Balaam Wood Academy is also on the lookout for professionals and business leaders to join students online and share sector insights with them.
Last month, GBCC media and communications officer Feron Jayawardene attended a virtual session, answering questions about being a public relations and media professional.
The Chamber will continue to host work experience students over the summer.
