Chamber welcomes Malaysian High Commissioner for talks with Birmingham firms
Trade links between the West Midlands and Malaysia were given a boost when the Greater Birmingham Global Chamber of Commerce welcomed the High Commissioner of Malaysia for his first visit outside of London.
His Excellency Dato’ Indera Dr Azfar Mohamad Mustafar, High Commissioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom, joined business leaders at the Chamber’s 54 Hagley Road headquarters for his first regional engagement since taking office earlier this year.
The visit provided an opportunity to explore new opportunities for bilateral trade, investment and business collaboration.
It brought together senior figures from the Malaysian High Commission, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), the West Midlands Growth Company and local businesses.
Chamber members from sectors including technology, advanced manufacturing and logistics joined the discussions, exploring opportunities for investment and greater commercial collaboration between the two markets.
The programme included an overview of the West Midlands' investment proposition, the Chamber’s export support and insights into Malaysia's priorities.
Jayne Hume, head of the Global Chamber division, said: “We were honoured to welcome His Excellency to Birmingham for what we understand was his first regional visit since taking office earlier this year.
“It was an excellent visit, bringing together businesses and key stakeholders with a shared ambition to develop stronger commercial connections between Malaysia and the West Midlands.
“Both markets have significant strengths in areas such as technology, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and innovation, and there is real potential to turn these shared interests into practical business opportunities.
“Our ambition is for this visit to mark the beginning of a long-term relationship with the Malaysian High Commission, MIDA and MATRADE, supporting bilateral trade, investment and meaningful partnerships that benefit businesses in both markets.
“At the Chamber, we are committed to connecting Greater Birmingham businesses with global opportunities, and visits such as this play an important role in opening doors and building the relationships that make international trade happen.”
